I have gone back and forth with myself on where and how to start off this blog. I have decided that in order for you to understand all of my ‘whys’ you have to understand a little bit about me. The last year for me has been a whirlwind of ups and downs that have gotten me to the place I am at currently. 2015 started out as a year when my theatrical dreams were coming true. I was coming off of the high of choreographing Les Miserable for the collaboration of Danville Area Community College (DACC) and Danville Light Opera (DLO) the year before into choreographing (and making a cameo appearance in) La Cage Aux Folles, into playing a role and choreographing a show I never thought Danville would accept: Rocky Horror Show. One of my best friends, Bryan Jenkins and I had many nights where we would sit on my back porch and dream of how we could pull off playing Frank N. Furter and Columbia. That dream became a reality. Not only did Danville accept us, they begged for more. We sold out 5 performances in April and 4 more performances in October.
This show opened up an entire new world for me. I had not performed in a leading role in many, many years, and this show not only reminded me of how much I love the stage, but it changed me on a very personal level. My self confidence came out of hiding, and I decided it was time for my life to change…and change it did. I became much more aware of myself and my surroundings, and I ended up having one of the most fun, eye opening summers of my life.
I fell in love with my town. I grew up in the theatre company, and I knew that it housed a TON of incredible talent…but I had no idea the magnitude of talent that exists within the local music scene. The bands I heard over that summer helped change me. The people that surrounded the bands helped change me. The events that my community offered – Summer Sounds, Culture Shock, etc. – changed me. I feel like I finally saw our community as a place that I really want to be.
And THAT is why I am starting this blog…because if this community can get me through this divorce, this move, this shift, this transition…then maybe it can help you in some way too. I want to bring awareness to how great our town is. I want people to fall in love with it the way I have fallen in love with it. I want to be a part of making our generation the generation that changed Danville. I cannot wait to introduce you to this beautiful world that has saved me.
