Through my part-time job with Neuhoff Media, I have been spending a lot more time with a side of the City of Danville that I have never really gotten to know. I have learned so many things about this great city in the short five months that I have had this job, and I decided it was important that you know these things as well! I can’t wait to share some of the things I have learned with you! So I am kicking the week off with a new app that recently launched that makes key communication SUPER EASY: Our Danville.
Did you know that when it comes to communicating to our public officials in the City of Danville, there’s an app for that? Several people have worked really hard to bring you, the citizens, an easy and up to date way to bring awareness to your city of issues going on, such as potholes or flooded streets, as well as bring you key information about things going on in the city!
To get this app on your phone, simply search for it in the App Store (iPhones) or on Google Play (Samsung), or simply click here.
After you open it up, you will see this:
To submit a request (aka a concern such as a pothole or a flooded road), simply hit the submit request button where it will tap into your GPS and mark your location. Simply snap a picture (if you would like), and type in the specifics. Submit it and you’re done! If you provide your email address, the city will keep you posted on the status of the request.
“This really gives us a chance to get like 30,000 eyes on our community,” Ross Hilleary, Planning Technician for the city of Danville, told me in a radio interview. “It also allows us (the city) to be more accountable.”
Another thing I really like about it is that you can see the requests other people have made. Not only does that aspect help multiple requests for the same problem not be multiplied, but it allows you to look in your own neighborhood to see what the issues are and what people are concerned about. In my opinion, this allows you, as a community member, the opportunity to get involved with fixing up your neighborhood.
Samantha McCoy, Property Compliance Manager for the city, says, “It is definitely more than just a complaint app. Not only does it build a bridge between the city and the citizen, it also has a lot of great information.” The app has features such as the announcement section which informs citizens of things like changes in days for solid waste or yard waste pick up.
The app also links users to different city websites such as the City of Danville and Vermilion Advantage. There is also a community calendar, which they are working to improve and make their own; amenities, which takes you to different city services and landmarks; and dining, powered by Urban Spoon.
I really love these steps that the City of Danville is taking to make it better. The more I learn, the more pride I have for what is going on here. People really are trying to make it better, and I believe they are doing a GREAT job! So support them! Download the app, and get involved in your community!
