One of my favorite parts of Danville is the downtown area. It is actually the specific place that changed my entire attitude about Danville and made me open my eyes to what is really happening here. It was last summer when I really saw the change. The Summer Sounds concerts began to grow bigger and better…Culture Shock brought in a whole new world right in our back yard…new businesses began to pop up that were working hard to make a difference in the downtown area.
As I sat down to plan out this series, I knew I had to designate a day to let everyone else see what I saw and continue to see about our amazing Downtown Danville. I believe this is the epicenter of change for our community.
When you talk about Downtown Danville, you have to mention Downtown Danville, Inc….or DDI. “The mission of Downtown Danville, Inc. is to promote a vibrant business, residential and entertainment district while serving as a catalyst for economic, social and cultural enrichment.” (from the DDI website) And THAT is exactly what I see them achieving. New businesses are popping up all the time with more on their way, along with revitalization of old buildings and the preservation of the history of Danville.
One of my favorite businesses that has arrived downtown in the last year is Cafe 13. This business is located right next door to the court house and serves as an awesome stop for coffee and fresh breakfast and lunch. I highly recommend their crepes and seasonal drinks.
Also, Temple Plaza, on the corner of North and Vermilion streets, is the place to be every Friday night when in the Danville area during the summer. Summer Sounds and AMBUCS trade off every other week and hold FREE live music along with food and drink vendors. Although this summer has almost come to a close (can you believe it?), you still have two more weeks to get down there and enjoy our community in full force. This coming Friday, August 19, AMBUCS presents Hillbilly Deluxe from 6pm-9pm and next Friday, August 26, Summer Sounds has their summer finale with Andy Mo and 90’s Daughter from 6pm-10pm.
After these incredible FREE shows, hit the nightlife down the alley at Fatman’s Warehouse who also holds live FREE music on Friday nights after the downtown concerts. This is an amazing establishment with the nicest staff who are sure to show you a good time. The outdoor atmosphere in the alley is a great place to end your evening with your friends.
The last thing I really want to mention is Culture Shock. Last year was this free outdoor music festival’s first year and was a hit. This year is sure to be even bigger and better and brings such amazing positive vibes to the Downtown Danville area. Three stages, an amazing lineup of music, a plethora of vendors, and an atmosphere that brings you something new around every corner. Don’t miss it!
I am so in love with this area of our city and community and I hope that a few of my insights can help you to fall in love with it as well. The more we support the Downtown area, the more it will continue to grow. The possibilities are endless…we just have to take action and be a part of that growth.
