One of my favorite things about Vermilion County is that there is talent EVERYWHERE. There are so many opportunities for artists of many kinds to release their talents out into our community. From theatre to poetry to painting to performing, surely there is a creative outlet here for you…and if there’s not, there are a LOT of people who will support you in starting one.
One of the coolest things about the creative community in Vermilion County is the theatre scene. We have FIVE community theatres right here in Danville with another incredible one right across the Indiana boarder and several other smaller groups who contribute to our theatre world. If you have ever wanted to act, sing, dance, direct, produce, choreograph, build a set, etc…..you absolutely can. This theatre community is so supportive of one another and is forever growing.
Look into each of these incredible organizations and get involved:
DLO Musical Theatre – DLO focuses on musicals. I am proud to have been involved with them pretty much my entire life. Their upcoming season includes The Adams Family, Violet, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
Red Mask Players – Red Mask focuses on plays (all speaking and no musical numbers). Their upcoming season includes Ordinary People, Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, and proof.
DACC Players – The DACC Players put on both musicals and plays. They are the one who brought our community the insanely successful Rocky Horror Show last year.
Lincoln Park Theatre Company – The Lincoln Park Theatre Company utilizes the amazing outdoor stage at Lincoln Park in Danville. They put on a musical every summer in the amazing outdoor atmosphere. They recently brought you Hallelujah Girls.
The Darkhorse Theatre Company – Darkhorse is the newest company to join the Vermilion County theatre community. They are currently in rehearsal for their first production, August: Osage County, which is coming up August 26-28.
Beef House Dinner Theatre – Even though they are not located in Vermilion County, the Beef House Dinner Theatre is still a HUGE part of our community and the theatre scene. Not only do you get to see incredible shows, but you get to enjoy the famous Beef House food while doing so.
Are you a writer and are not really sure what to do with your writing? Do you paint, draw or take pictures? You should be a part of the Rebelsfare Collective! This is a group I stumbled upon last January when I did my very first interview for the blog with Dustin Danger. This group has created a place for Vermilion County artists to publish your work. They have published 3 books (two of poetry, lyrics and short stories and one full of local art) and 1 album with much more on the way. I was actually lucky enough to be published in Volume Two, and have two of my original songs on Album One! You can purchase the books on Amazon by clicking here, and you can listen to the entire album for free here!
I love the feeling of this group because everyone just wants to make Danville and the surrounding areas better. The album takes you on a trip around Danville, and the books are full of incredible pieces written by people that you see every day. If you are a lost artist that needs a home…get in touch with us! You can contact me, or send the guys a message on their FaceBook page!
These are just two areas of creative outlets in our community, and there are so many more! There are several dance studios, comedians, bands, a Vermilion Festival Chorus, Municipal Band, the Danville Symphony Orchestra and so much more that abides here. We even have a brand new acting studio – Tempest Acting Studio – ran by the insanely talented Matt Hester where he will coach you!
So let those creative juices flow!!! If you are interested in something that I have not covered in this article – feel free to contact me! I would love to put you in touch with the right people who can help you to release the artist inside of you!
