The lights, the ice, the competitiveness, the excitement! Hockey has always been a thing in Danville. Some of my favorite childhood memories are from attending the Danville Wings games with my step-dad and cousin sitting at the end of the ice doing the YMCA. Now we have the Danville Dashers who not only bring us amazing hockey, but who care deeply about our community. They are led by Coach Steve Harrison.
Coach has been in the hockey world his whole life. He grew up in Toronto, Canada and from there has played all over the world. He played in the minors for 15 years and was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 1978. After a successful career of playing, he began coaching which led him to Danville in August of 2014. While Danville is not his hometown, Coach has fallen in love with our community and has been a voice in giving back to our “blossoming” city. “There is really a buzz of the people happening. All the people who left in their early 20s have come back and want to see Danville succeed.”
Not only does Coach lead his team on the ice, but he leads them in giving back to the people who give to them at their games. The Danville Dashers are heavily involved in the many outreaches Danville has to offer. They just finished a six week hockey clinic at the YMCA where they volunteer regularly, they spend hours at the Salvation Army Food Pantry, the Faith Hope Ministries, the Danville Public Library, and many local schools. One non-profit they spend time at that is close to my heart is WorkSource enterprises – where I work. They spend a lot of time with our consumers and invite them to practices regularly. “Even though the owner is from Chicago, the team is owned by the people in Danville. They invest in us – we invest in them. I like that people can come to the games and see family – because we’re all just one big family.”
When Coach first started here in Danville, he felt like the Dashers were the biggest secret here. Now there are no more secrets. The team has earned the trust of the community and he gives his players all the credit – on and off the ice. He takes pride in the way they are representing Danville.
Outside of hockey and “living at the rink”, Coach really enjoys the people of Danville. While his wife lives in Toledo, Ohio and his daughter lives in Texas, the people of Danville have really taken him and his son, Andrew – who also plays for the Dashers – into our community and treated them like family. “The people here are great. They have taken me in and that means a lot to me.” He also really enjoys the “culture side” that Danville has to offer. Last fall he came and saw The Rocky Horror Show at DACC and he talked about how Culture Shock was “electrifying.” Coach loves that the growth in Danville is really keeping up with the atmosphere people are creating.
Danville is certainly blessed to have a guy like Coach Harrison to lead our Dashers and show our community not only what a great team they have on the ice – but what community service and giving back is like off the ice.
