Audition season is OFFICIALLY here, and I feel like I have had a TON of questions about how to get involved in the theatre world and what auditions are really like here in Vermilion County. It seems that almost every theatre group is gearing up for their winter productions and starting to prepare for their spring shows. So let’s do a little recap of what is going on right now and then find out how you can get involved with it!
Two theatre groups have cast their spring shows:
The Darkhorse Theatre Company is doing Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike on March 24-26 at The Bremer Theatre at DACC! While I do not know much about this show, I know the cast – and they are all phenomenal actors:
The DACC Players have also already cast their spring show, Funny Girl. This show will be playing April 7-9 at The Bremer Theatre at DACC. This is a fantastic show about the path to stardom by an ordinary Jewish girl originally played by the fabulous Barbra Streisand. While I have not worked with all of this cast before, I am excited to be the choreographer for this show and to work with a fresh set of faces. Also, did I mention two of my favorite people are starring? My Frank N. Furter and Magenta from Rocky Horror are playing Nick and Fanny!
Fanny: Flyn Williams
Nick: Bryan Jenkins
Mrs. Bryce: Jeanne Dunn
Eddie: Aiden Tibben
Ziegfeld Tenor: Colin Hess
Workman 2 plus additional Ensemble: Jeff Williams
Mrs. Strakosh: Mandy McCool
Mrs. Meeker: Kelli Carlton
Mr. Renaldi: Sarthak Jain
Heckie: Laramie Ziegler
Workman plus additional Ensemble: Gaige Davis

Ziegfeld Girls plus additional Ensemble:
While Funny Girl has been cast, if you still want to be involved in working back stage or doing any “behind the scenes” projects, you can contact me and I will put you in contact with the directors!
DLO Musical Theatre is in the middle of auditioning The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. You can catch night two of auditions TONIGHT (January 31, 2017) at the Center Stage Rehearsal Hall at the Village Mall (right next to Burlington Coat Factory). The auditions begin at 6:30pm, and you just need to prepare a short song so that they can hear your vocal ability. You can find ALL of the info here. The show will run April 22 and 23 at the Dick Van Dyke Auditorium at the Danville High School.
With my experience with auditioning with DLO, you can expect to get there and fill out a form that will give the directors and casting committee all of the info they need – what part you want to play, what your experience is like (don’t worry if you don’t have any!), would you be interested in working back-stage, etc. Then you will turn that in and play the waiting game! One by one you will be called in to sing your song with a provided pianist and then you will return to the waiting area. Once everyone has sang, everyone will be called into the rehearsal space and the casting committee will call up groups to read from the script. After that, you may have to do a short choreography audition – but don’t panic! This is just to see how well you do at picking up the material…and if you have no rhythm, IT’S OK. So go to this audition tonight! They need a big cast, and it will be such a fun show!
The Red Mask Players are also coming up on their auditions for their spring show, Proof. This show was adapted into a movie in 2005 that starred Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gylllenhaal. There are roles for two men and two women in this cast and is being directed by Amanda Coutant. Auditons are February 6 and 7 at 7pm at the Kathryn Randolph Theatre at 601 N Vermilion Street in Danville. Performances will be March 31, April 1, 2, 7, 8 & 9. Red Mask typically does not do musicals, so if you do not sing or dance but really want to be involved – here is the place for you!
I really hope you all go out and get involved in one or more of these shows, and if you do not wish to participate – please support the theatre groups and go see the shows! This coming weekend Red Mask is putting on their second weekend of The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, and on February 17-19, DLO Musical Theatre is putting on Violet. And let’s definitely not forget about our friends across the boarder – check out all the fabulous shows coming up at The Beef House Dinner Theatre in Covington, Indiana! Also, be on the lookout for The Lincoln Park Theatre Company with their summer show (TBA) coming up July 21-23.
